Despite Covid challenges, Sligo powering ahead with major projects

Despite the cut in income due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sligo County Council is hoping to embark on more major capital projects next year.

These include the new Stephen Street Plaza in Sligo Town, the Sligo Surf Centre at Strandhill, and further development of Coolaney Mountain Bike Centre

It’s also hoped to see a number of major road projects completed next year, among them the N4/N15 upgrade in Sligo town and the new Collooney/Castlebaldwin dual carriageway, one of the largest such projects in the country.

Meanwhile, the new Western Distributor Road from Caltragh on the outskirts of Sligo town to the Finisklin area is now almost finished.

Details of the various projects were outlined at yesterday’s budget meeting of the county council.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Director of Services Tom Kilfeather outlined the challenging circumstances in which the local authority is now operating because of the uncertainty caused by Covid.

However, Mr Kilfeather says the projects planned for the year ahead have the potential to bring major long-term benefits to Sligo.
