More people swimming in sea, climbing mountains . . . so more caution needed

With more people swimming in the sea off the north west as well as climbing on hills and mountains in the region, there’s a renewed call for people to exercise caution and to be aware of safety measures they should take.

It follows four people getting into difficulty yesterday afternoon in the water off Rosses Point.

All were taken to Sligo University Hospital for assessment.

Two were airlifted by the Coast Guard Rescue 118 helicopter.

Another was rescued by the Sligo Bay RNLI lifeboat and taken to an ambulance at the lifeboat station.

One managed to get ashore unaided.

All four were seasoned swimmers but got into difficulty due to a swell when trying to get ashore.

Aisling Gillen, Sligo Bay RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer says people should never let their guard down when going into the sea.

It’s also been a busy year for the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team.

Its volunteer members yesterday helped a woman who fractured her ankle while on Knocknarea Mountain.

That rescue was coordinated by Team Leader Ciaran Davis, who has been telling Ocean Fm News about the increased demand for their services.
