Domestic violence victims suffer between 30 and 35 incidences of abuse before reporting

Divisional Protective Services Units are now operational in every Garda Division in the country.
Personnel in the division receive specific training to investigate incidents such as sexual crime, domestic abuse and online child exploitation.
Sergeant Suzanne Gilmore is part of the unit in the Sligo/Leitrim Division.

She says statistics show it takes between 30 and 35 incidences of domestic violence before a person reports the abuse.

In a first for the state, a man was convicted of coercive control earlier this month under the Domestic Violence Act 2018.

Sergeant Gilmore explains what coercive control means and some of the activities associated with it.
