Local TD calls for more supports for domestic violence refuges

There have been calls for more supports for domestic violence refuges after an 87 per cent rise in cases sent to prosecutors.

The Director of Public Prosecutors Claire Loftus told a conference yesterday her office has already received 220 more files on these cases than in all of 2019.

Opposition parties and the National Women’s Council say support services need more funding.

Martin Kenny, Sinn Féin’s spokesman on Justice, says the State should be funding more refuges – and Irish men need to do more to stop violence in the home.
