International travel poses a Covid-19 risk – CMO

The Chief Medical Officer says international travel will be one of the biggest Covid 19 risks in the run-up to Christmas.

Dr Tony Holohan has urged people to avoid non- essential travel – and that includes Irish people abroad flying home for Christmas.

NPHET is hopeful all counties can move out of Level 5 restrictions on December 1st based on the current trends.

But Dr Holohan has raised concerns about the risk of international travel in the weeks ahead:

Health officials say it’s “really good news” that the reproduction rate of the virus has fallen to 0.6.

A further 395 cases have been confirmed in the most recent released Covid-19 figures along with one additional death.

The 14 day incidence rate has fallen to 135 per 100 thousand – which is one of the lowest in the EU.

27 additional cases were recorded in Donegal, 7 in Sligo and less than 5 in Leitrim

The latest 14 day incidence rate figures shows that the Sligo/ Strandhill local electoral area recorded the highest number of cases of all the local electoral areas in this region.

Between October 27th and November 9th there were 46 cases which means the rate per 100,000 of population in the area stands at 217.7.  This is the only local area to return a figure than the National figure which has been set at 151.5.

There were 22 additional cases in Sligo/ Drumcliff (124.5), 31 in Ballymote/Tubbercurry (116). 30 additional cases were registered in the Donegal Local electoral area (113.2) while less than 5 cases were reported in Manorhamilton area.
