Doherty unhappy with Independents’ support for Varadkar

A Donegal TD has criticised Independent TDs for supporting Leo Varadkar in last night’s motion of no confidence which took place in the Dáil.

The Sinn Fein Spokesperson on finance, Donegal TD Pearse Doherty, says the decision taken by 9 independents to support the Tánaiste is one that they can only answer.

Speaking earlier to Ocean FM News, Deputy Doherty says it was disappointing that the majority Independents backed the Fine Gael leader:

It was always likely that Leo Varadkar was going to have survived last night’s vote.   Sinn Féin were accused of trying to turn the Dáil into the Jerry Springer Show by tabling the motion.

The accusation came during the debate and was made by the Fianna Fáil Junior Minister Sean Fleming. Deputy Doherty rejected this suggestion as ‘mud slinging’ and pointed to the fact that Fine Gael’s own defence of their party leader was lightweight.

So how damaging was the last week for Irish politics? Not alone did the GP Contract leak dominate the media but also the long running Justice Seamus Wolfe issue was front and centre.

Commenting on this issue, Deputy Doherty says there are very serious challenges facing the justice system in this Country:
