Mercosur trade deal ‘on ice’

The Mercosur trade deal between the EU and four South American countries is effectively on ice according to Sinn Féin’s Chris MacManus.

It follows an amendment passed in the European Parliament this week.

Opposition to the pact has been growing due to concerns over deforestation in the Amazon.

The deal allowed for an additional 99 thousand tonnes of South American beef to be imported into the EU levy-free.

Chris MacManus says that would have been bad news for Ireland

Concerns have been raised in Ireland about the impact it would have on the Irish beef industry.

Chris MacManus also says MEPs in the European Parliament took a tougher stance this week
