Doherty looks to tighten legislation on lobbying

Donegal TD Pearse Doherty will bring forward legislation in the coming days which if passed will give the Standards in Public Office Commission powers to investigate and sanction public officials who flout Section 22 of the Regulation of Lobbying Act.

The act prohibits former ministers from being employed by lobby groups within 12 months of leaving office.

This week the former minister Michael Darcy was appointed CEO of the Irish Association of Investment Managers, which had lobbied him and his own department while he was Minister for State.

Deputy Doherty says that the Standards In Public Office  has repeatedly, called for powers to enforce the act.

The Donegal TD says the loopholes should have been addressed by the previous government.
