COVID-19: Third-level students seeking clarity over rents, accommodation

A meeting of councillors from the Sligo borough municipal district agreed this morning to support the Union of Students who are calling for clarity in relation to the payment of rents for accommodation.

Some students have not been in their accommodation since March because of the Covid-19 restrictions but have not received any concession on rent.

There are now fears that the same situation might arise in the coming academic year if there are further restrictions or if there is a local lockdown.

Independent Socialist Councillor Declan Bree told this morning’s meeting that with new leases being signed now, students might end up paying rent on rooms they may or may not use.

He spoke to Ocean FM News after this morning’s meeting.

The president of St Angela’s College Students Union, Joe Redahan, has been telling Ocean FM why it’s important that people are aware of this issue now.
