Columbarium sought for Kilmactigue graveyard in Sligo

The increasing interest in cremation rather than traditional burials, coupled with the difficulty in finding suitable lands for burial grounds, is reflected in a call for another columbarium to be provided in County Sligo.

A columbarium is a place for the respectful storage of urns holding a deceased’s cremated remains.

A columbarium has been provided at the cemetery in Sligo town while it’s expected another will be provided next year in Rosses Point cemetery.

At this week’s meeting of the Sligo County Council, Fine Gael Councillor Martin Connolly asked the council to provide a columbarium on the grounds of Kilmactigue graveyard.

Director of Services Tom Kilfeather said there was no money for it at present but he expected more similar requests to be forthcoming in the future.

Cllr Connolly told Ocean FM News why he made his proposal.
