Poor mental health & suicide issues higher in Traveller Community

Suicide and poor mental health is having and disproportionate impact on the Traveller community with suicide rates at least 7 times higher for Traveller men and 6 times higher for Traveller women when compared to the rest of the population.

Those are the views of a local representative of the Sligo Traveller Support Group.

Jamie Murphy has expressed his concern with the figures and is encouraging Travellers, Political Representatives and the Mental Health Services to join in webinar on Traveller mental health.

This event will be taking place today to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

Jamie Murphy is encouraging as many as possible to take part in the webinar
