Sligo councillors vote to no longer recognise Easkey Community Council

Sligo county councillors have decided that the council will no longer recognise Easkey Community Council in west Sligo as a community group.

It follows a motion from Independent Councillor Michael Clarke that was agreed at a council meeting yesterday, Monday.

Cllr Clarke also called for the county council to now encourage and facilitate the formation of a new community group, representative of the whole community of Easkey, so that public money can continue to be channelled to the Easkey area.

Also at yesterday’s council meeting, there was a similar motion from Solidarity People Before Profit Councillor Gino O Boyle. However, this motion went further by calling on the council chief executive to ‘immediately shut down all public funding to Easkey Community Council.’

Cllr O Boyle’s proposal also called for the council to secure all the council’s assets for the benefit of Easkey community and to audit all planning permissions granted to the community council.

However, after Council Chief Executive Ciaran Hayes advised councillors that Cllr O Boyle’s motion could put the council in some legal difficulty, it was defeated by six votes to three, with five councillors abstaining.

Cllr Clarke told Ocean FM News what will now happen after his motion was agreed to.
