Plea to people NOT to swim in sea at Strandhill

There have been numerous appeals today for people NOT to swim in the sea at the waterfront at Strandhill.

It’s after people were seen in the water today.

A number of callers to Ocean FM Radio asked that an appeal be put out to people not to swim in the area,  where swimming is prohibited.

No life guards are on duty there.

While the location is popular with surfers, it is dangerous for swimmers because of rip-currents and shifting sands.

There have been a number of drownings in the area in the past.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Sinead Maguire is also appealing to people not to swim in the area.

She points out there are two other nearby areas where people can safely swim, Dorrians Strand and Culleenamore.

And she also told Ocean FM News about a safety initiative taking place in the coastal village.
