Official opening of Knocknashee Walking Trail on Saturday

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council and local councillor Dara Mulvey will officially open the Knocknashee Walking Trail this Saturday.

The trail leads to Knocknashee Common, which contains the foundations of late Bronze Age settlemens and Neolithic cairns.

The hilltop of Knocknashee provides a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and is renowned for its association with folklore.

Archaeologists from Queens University in Belfast are currently excavating and studying the ramparts of a hill fort in the area.

Michael Toolan is chairman of the Achonry Mullinabreena Community Enhancement Group, which has spearheaded the project.
