Planning may be required to change gallery benches in Sligo courthouse



It’s emerged that planning permission may be required for changes to benches in a gallery in Sligo Courthouse to make it suitable for jury trials so as to adhere to Covid-19 restrictions.

 

That’s because Sligo courthouse is a listed building.

 

The issue of Sligo courthouse’s suitability for jury trails has arisen after fears that jury trials may be moved from Sligo to Letterkenny.

 

There’s a strong campaign locally to keep jury trials in Sligo, with any move opposed by virtually all of those involved in and connected with the courts.

 

The matter has already been raised in the Dail and with Justice Minister Helen McEntee.
