Sligo Rovers moved off the foot of the SSE Airtricity League table following a 2-0 win over Derry City on Friday evening.
This fixture at the Ryan McBride Brandywell – the first of the resumed season – saw Rovers dominate for long stages.
They hit the front with a headed effort from Kyle Callan McFadden in the 19th minute, the Donegal man applying the finish from Regan Donelon’s corner kick.
1-0 ahead at the interval, Rovers doubled their advantage when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Ronan Coughlan in the 51st minute. The striker dusted himself off to find the net from the spot kick.
The result – Rovers first win of the campaign – is enough to lift them off the bottom of the table, with Cork City not in action until Sunday.
After the game, manager Liam Buckley praised the work-rate of his side when he spoke to Ocean FM Sport:
Goalscorer Kyle Callan-McFadden also hailed the significance of the result:
Next up for the Bit O’Red is the visit of Waterford to the Showgrounds on Tuesday evening for a 7.45pm kick-off.
