Ireland failing to attract sufficient numbers of European tourists

Calls are being made today for ‘joined up thinking’ to be used when it comes to utilising the potential of tourist attractions across the north west.

Manorhamilton MD Councillor, Sean McDermott has made the calls after he welcomed the recent allocation of 800,000 euro to the Sligo Greenway and the Sligo/Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway Greenway.

The Fine Gael Councillor has now called for Greenways and Blueways to be connected so that Ireland can attract a greater percentage of the 20 million Europeans that partake in leisure activity breaks on an annual basis.

Cllr McDermott says the reason that Ireland attracts a relatively low number of these tourists is due to the fact that we do not have long cycle or walking routes on Blueways or Greenways.
