Sligo hospital marks milestone with more than one million patient X-Ray examinations

The Radiology Department in Sligo University Hospital is celebrating a milestone as it marks one million patient examinations since introducing a new imaging system nine years ago.

The hospital was the first in the country to go live with the National Integrated Medical Imaging system in June 2011.

It is a digital filmless system with access to all of a patient’s previous imaging at the click of a button.

Dr Stephen Davitt is consultant radiologist at the hospital and radiology associate clinical director for the Saolta Hospital Group.

He says reaching one million patient examinations reflects the hard work of all staff in his department, as well as the increasing demand for its services, which are provided 24/7 every day of the year.

Dr Davitt also says its a timely reminder of just how dependent modern medicine has become on all forms of imaging; this includes X-Rays, Ultrasound, CT, MRI and Nuclear Medicine as well as minimally invasive procedures performed in radiology.

He has been telling Ocean FM News about the system and the key role imaging and radiology now plays every day in diagnosis and treatment.
