Growing concern over damage at archaeological sites

There is growing concern over damage to archaeological and historically important monuments throughout the region, but particularly in County Sligo, which has one of the richest collection of Neolithic or Stone Age sites in the country.

There are at least 75 passage tombs in County Sligo, almost one-third of the estimated 240 in the State, according to the Sligo Neolithic Landscapes Group, which is pressing for the county’s Neolithic heritage to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Padraig Meehan, a member of that Sligo group, has been telling Ocean FM News about the extent and seriousness of the problem.

He told our reporter Harry Keaney that creating awareness of the significance of these sites is key to preventing damage being done.
