Annual religious events hit by Covid restrictions

A number of popular religious events in the north west are the latest to fall victim to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Garland Sunday Mass at the holy well of Tobernalt, on the shores of Lough Gill near Sligo, has been cancelled. It usually takes place every year on the last Sunday in July.

Fr Jim Murray is the parish priest of St John’s Parish, Carraroe, in which the Tobernalt Holy Well is situated.

Meanwhile, pilgrims planning to climb Croagh Patrick this weekend are being asked to stay away.

Around 25 thousand people would normally make the annual pilgrimage for Reek Sunday.

Father Charlie McDonnell is the parish priest of Westport.
