New Achonry bishop to be ordained on August 30th

A new bishop of the Catholic diocese of Achonry will be ordained on Sunday August 30th in St Nathy’s Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen.

The ordination ceremony to install Fr Paul Dempsey as successor to Bishop Brendan Kelly had been postponed from April because of the coronavirus.

The vacancy in the Diocese of Achonry arose after Bishop Kelly was appointed bishop of Galway.

Fr. Dempsey, who comes from Carlow, has spent 22 years serving as a priest in Kildare. His installation as Bishop of Achonry will take place during a ceremony in St Nathy’s Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen.
