Call for more support, promotion for local festivals, events

A Sligo councillor is calling for money to be allocated in next year’s council budget for the appointment of a festival and events coordinator for the county.

Fine Gael Councillor Thomas Walsh says that in counties such as Mayo and Kilkenny, as well as Ennis in Co Clare, there are people and offices dedicated to promoting local festivals and events.

He says such an appointment for Sligo was recommended back in 2018.

Cllr Walsh says there is a need in the county for more diverse events and festivals, all properly coordinated and promoted.

He says the county already has the scenic tourism attractions but the increasing number of events and festivals now being organised need more support and coordination.

He says the council must allocate adequate funding for this in its next budget.
