Drumkeeran Landslides raised in Dáil



The plight of those in Drumkeeran impacted by recent landslides was raised in the Dáil yesterday evening.

 

The Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan says the area in question is a special area of conservation and added that further slides could occur in the future.

 

 

Sligo Leitrim TD Marian Harkin expressed her disaffection with the response by Minister Noonan,

The Independent TD has echoed calls from her Independent College TD Michael Fitzmaurice for a taskforce to be established in order to help those that have been impacted by the floods:

 

 

The Caoirthleacht of Leitrim Council has called for the recent Drumkeeran landslides to be used a ‘pilot programme’ into accessing the current scale of afforestation in Leitrim.

Councillor Mary Bohan made the comments in response to a commitment from the Minister for Agriculture to carry out an independent report on the recent landslides in  to establish if forest activity contributed to the slide.

Speaking to Ocean FM news, Cll Bohan says research need to be done into the effects of forestry activity and the construction of windfarms are having on the area.
