Western Rail Corridor unlikely to proceed



Any prospect of extending the Western Rail Corridor from Athenry to Sligo appears to have receded as Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Greens step up government formation talks.

 

There is no mention of any western rail extension in the Green Party’s manifesto – as it negotiates a viable programme for government with the two main parties.

 

The ‘Western Rail Trail campaign’,advocates that the route should instead be used as a Greenway, something which it says would be considerably cheaper than building a new rail line.
