Renewed effort to tackle illegal dumping in Sligo

Members of the public across county Sligo are being urged to report instances of illegal dumping to the authorities.

Sligo County Council has described the current levels of dumping during the Coivd pandemic as ‘shocking’.

But, it says any prosecutions will have to be evidence-based.

County Council members this week backed a proposal from Fine Gael’s Thomas Walsh and Gerard Mullaney for a renewed cross-community effort to tackle Sligo’s illegal dumping problem.

It will involve local representatives, Tidy Towns groups, Coillte and local community development groups.

Councillor Thomas spoke to Ocean FM’s Austin O’Callaghan about the scale of the problem in county Sligo.
