Marian Harkin to hold government formation talks with new administration

A number of Independent TD’s including Sligo Leitrim TD, Marian Harkin will meet Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil today to discuss forming a government.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have agreed to form an administration together, but are eight seats short of a Dáil majority.

The Greens, the Social Democrats and Labour are still deciding whether to go into government with the larger parties.

Ahead of the talks there is still speculation whether a Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael government with Independents would be stable enough.

The new administration are hoping to entice smaller parties, including the Green Party, the Labour Party and the Social Democrats, to increase their Dáil numbers.

The Green Party is meeting remotely today to work on a response to the Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael joint policy plan.

The party said it wants more clarity on issues such as carbon emissions and housing.
