Cllr. Baker calls for co-operation in effort to clear blockages in rivers

There has been unprecedented flooding on farmland throughout the region in recent months.

And sometimes, it can be exacerbated by obstacles and blockages on rivers, which hinders the flow of water.

It was a concern voiced at today’s meeting of Sligo County Council by Fianna Fail Councillor Martin Baker.

He proposed that the council call on the Office of Public Works to revisit its prohibition on dredging on an outlet from Lough Corran and on sections of the Unshin River that flows from Lough Arrow and joins the Owenmore River near Ballisodare.

In some areas, work cannot be done on rivers in special areas of conservation but Cllr Baker says cooperation is necessary to ensure everyone can be accommodated.
