Minister McHugh says knowledge of history is important



All first year students in secondary schools will see history become a mandatory subject from September.

Minister for Education and Skills and Donegal TD Joe McHugh has announced that History will now have a special core status within the framework of the Junior Cycle.

It will also become mandatory for all schools to offer history as a junior certificate subject and available to all students alongside English, Irish and Maths.

Deputy McHugh spoke about how important it is that children and people of the North West learn about their heritage:
