Gardaí warn of ‘romance fraud’ this valentines



Men and women caught up in romance fraud were scammed of over € 1 million last year.

Gardaí say 75 cases were reported in 2019, including one case where a woman lost € 62,000 after she struck up a relationship with a man online.

Separately a man who met a woman in an online chat room sent her € 50,000.

Romance fraud involves online dating sites used by fraudsters who develop relationships with victims using fake ID, photos and life stories.
