Councillor says children are waiting too long for assessments

Children from across the north west with disabilities are facing major waiting times to have an assessment of their needs completed.

Nationally more than 4,600 applications are overdue with over three thousand at least three months behind.

The ‘assessment of need’ allows children to be diagnosed with a disability, like autism, and then apply for the care they require..

The Special Needs Parents Association says the HSE is supposed to have these tests finished within six months.

Leitrim Sinn Fein Councillor Padraig Fallon says the long delays are causing stress for families of those waiting on the diagnoses to be carried out.
