Childcare workers want Government to make childcare a public service

Local Childcare workers receive little pay and no holiday leave.

These are just some of the issues highlighted yesterday when over 30,000 people protested in Dublin calling on the government to give more support for childcare sector workers.

Many were calling on the government to make the sector a public service because as a private service, regular hours are not paid.

John Davey is Vice Chair of SIPTU’s ‘Big Start’ and says many in the sector don’t get the same benefits as other workers.

Speaking to OceanFM News, John Davey says childcare in Ireland is ‘extremely expensive.’
