Planning application lodged for extension to North West Hospice in Sligo.

A planning application has been made to Sligo County Council for an extension to North West Hospice in Sligo.

The proposed extension will be on the site of the existing hospice, on the grounds of Sligo University Hospital.

The proposed extension would see the in-patient unit increase from its current 8-bed inpatient capacity to 12-bed single-room inpatient capacity.

It will also include accommodation for the community palliative care team, and outpatient and consultation facilities, as well as offices and meeting rooms to support HSE, community and volunteer activities.

The total cost of the project, which is included in the HSE’s capital plan for funding, is about €8m.

The North West Hospice has contributed about €300,000 to bring the project to design stage.

After planning permission is received, it is expected that building will start in 2021, with completion in 2023, subject to funding availability.

Pat Dolan, chairman of the North West Hospice, said the hospice recognised the need for some time to upgrade its facilities to meet the growing needs of the community in Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan.

John Hayes, chief officer of the community healthcare organisation area that covers Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo, says the co-location of the existing North West Hospice building with Sligo University Hospital has a real benefit to the clinical management and care for patients who require acute hospital services.

And he said the location of the new development on the same site will ensure this is retained.
