More farm inspections . . . and a new mapping system for Leitrim

There’s more farm inspections taking place.

And while farmers in the north west have been complaining about satellite inspections and delays in payments, there’s also more inspectors actually visiting farms.

In 2019, approximately 8,000 checks were carried out on the area claimed by farmers.

Department figures, seen by the Irish Farmers Journal, show that inspections increased by almost 10% from 7,403 to 8,068 between 2018 and 2017.

While the majority are satellite checks (85%), physical inspections by Department officials have increased by 33% in the last two years.

Meanwhile, farmers in Leitrim are being included in a new mapping system.

Barry Cassidy, News correspondent with the Farmers Journal, has been telling Ocean FM News about the increase in inspections, and Leitrim’s inclusion in the new mapping system.
