RIC commemoration should never take place

The Justice Minister hopes an agreement can be reached soon on a new date for the controversial RIC commemoration.

It was planned for Friday week but has been deferred following backlash over the police forces’ association with the ‘Black and Tans.’

Charlie Flanagan says he’ll now sit down with all interested parties in the hope of setting a new date for the months ahead.

The idea of staging such a celebration in the first place has been described as shocking and inappropriate.

That’s according to the Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson, and Sligo Leitrim TD, Martin Kenny TD who says that there is no public demand for such celebrations to remember what he described as brutal enforcers of British Rule.

Prior to last night’s decision to defer the commemoration the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Tom MacSharry had confirmed to OceanFM news that he would not be attending the event which was scheduled for January 17th in Dublin Castle.
