Progress expected shortly on Inishmurray boat trips

There are hopes that there will be a solution early this year to the long-running issue of access for passengers from tour boats to Inishmurray Island off the north Sligo coast.

Boat trips to the island have been banned on safety grounds by the Marine Survey Office of the Department of Transport.

Sligo County Council has approached the National Monuments Service about co-funding necessary for surveying and design work.

The council already has tenders for land and sea surveys in Clashymore Harbour on the island but work can be done only in fair weather conditions and in good daylight hours.

The council also has a costing from a firm of consulting engineers for analysis of survey data and potential design works.

Sligo Independent Alliance Councillor Marie Casserly says it’s hoped to have an update on the situation this month.
