Sligo University Hospital launch new virtual reality app for children to help them prepare for surgery

Sligo University Hospital have launched a new virtual reality app for children to help them prepare for surgery.

Its called ‘Little Journey’ and is available on Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store as a free download.

Research carried out by Sligo University Hospital’s Consultant Anaesthesiologist, Dr. Anne Dolan, at Temple Street Hospital, finds that anxiety before surgery affects around 50% of children and this rises to 60% by the time as child has to go under anaesthesia.

The interactive app aims to provide fun and engaging activities including showing full 360 degree views of the areas they will visit and tailored information on anaesthesiology.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Dr. Dolan says the ‘sense of the unknown can be distressing’ and hopes the app can help alleviate some of that.
