Sligo Traveller Support Group described as ‘out of touch’ in statement by Sligo County Council Corporate Services

Sligo Traveller Support Group has been described as ‘out of touch’ in a statement from Sligo County Council Corporate Services.

In the statement released to OceanFM News, the council raised issue with an article posted on the OceanFM website on November 27th where Jamie Murphy of the Sligo Traveller Support Group said there was a ‘failure of local authorities to draw down funding for Traveller accommodation.’

Mr Murphy was referring to figures released to Sinn Fein TD, Eoin O’Broin that show Sligo County Council have only drawn down €446,000 from a total 2019 Traveller accommodation budget of just over €1.4m

The Council Services statement says ‘Mr. Murphy demonstrates a lack of knowledge of build and refurbishment work in Traveller accommodation in Sligo.’

It says that the local authority is likely to exceed the €1.4m budget which is ‘unprecedented’, further stating that a ‘major element of the investment in Sligo strenuously was opposed by Sligo Traveller Support Group.’

The council say it has ‘not only met but exceeded its Traveller Accommodation targets.’
