€400,000 to alleviate Donegal Town flooding

€400, 000 has been allocated for interim flood relief works in and around Donegal Town.

It follows a visit by Minister Kevin Boxer Moran to Donegal County Council offices in Lifford this morning where it was announced that the Office of Public Works had approved funding for three additional schemes in the county.

The big-ticket allocations announced in Lifford this morning were for about €1.9m for a new flood relief scheme scheme in Ballybofey/Stranorlar; €3.3m in Buncrana and Ludden, and €6.8m for Ramelton.

Minister Moran’s visit coincided with Donegal County Council issuing adverts for consultants for a number of schemes, including in Glenties.

In the south of the county, the plan for Donegal Town is to improve flows on the River Eske, along with flood prevention measures with replacement of a culvert at Brookfield, improving storm pipes, work on walls along Castle Street and putting in a water rail in the vicinity of Clarendon Drive.

Some clearance work is also being considered on a stretch of the river, while further analysis will be done on the estuary.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Education Minister and Donegal TD Joe McHugh says this is all part of a €13m announcement for flood relief measures for more than 120 properties throughout the county.

Donegal Fianna Fail Councillor Micheál Naughton says work can start immediately on the much-needed work in Donegal Town where, he said, people have been living in fear of recurring flooding.

Donegal Fianna Fail TD Pat the Cope Gallagher says that while the money for interim flood relief measures in Donegal Town is welcome, further funding will be needed.
