Local Authorities not availing of funding for Traveller accommodation

A Sligo Traveller support group is hitting out at what it says is the failure of local authorities to draw down funding for Traveller accommodation.

Jamie Murphy, of the Sligo Traveller Support Group, says Sligo County Council has drawn down only €446,000 from a total 2019 Traveller accommodation budget of almost €1.5m.

Figures released to Sinn Fein TD Eoin O Broin show Donegal has drawn down nothing for 2019 from an allocation of €162,000, while Leitrim has drawn down nothing from an allocation of €178,000.

Nationally, only €4m has been spent on Traveller accommodation from a total of €13m during the first ten months of this year.

Jamie Murphy says the figures are part of an ongoing trend for decades.
