Sligo consultant says healthcare system cannot continue as it is



A Sligo-based top official in the Irish Medical Organisation says the healthcare system is getting worse and the situation cannot continue as it is.

Pathologist Dr Clive Kilgallen was speaking after the IMO voted in favour of organising a ballot of its consultants and non-consultant hospital doctors for industrial action.

Dr Kilgallen, well-known from his attendance at inquests in Sligo, says doctors never want to take industrial action.

But he says the lack of engagement by the government leaves them with no option.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, the chairman of the IMO’s  consultants’ committee outlined the background and`reasons for the situation that has now arisen.

He says consultants like himself could sit back in their offices and pretend the healthcare system is alright.

But he says the reality is that this is not the case.
