New extension approved for Summerhill College in Sligo

A new extension has been approved for Summerhill College in Sligo.

The new buildings, expected to be complete by September 2021, will be a major boost in helping the college cater for its growing number of students.

The Department of Education and Skills approved the new extension this week, news of which emerged this morning.

Work on appointing a design team will get underway in the coming months, with completion expected by September 2021.

The new extension will incorporate four new classrooms, two science laboratories, and a construction studies workshop.

Two classrooms for autism specific disorder will also be built to accommodate students with additional educational needs.

College Principal Paul Keogh says the extension will add to the overall campus master plan, which the school’s board of management has been developing over the last four years.

Mr Keogh says he and the college authorities are delighted with today’s news.

The extension will be an addition to the new €12.5m college building that was opened in 2013.

The approval for the new extension comes as student numbers at the college continues to grow.

A strategy to help fund the new extension is now being developed and it is hoped that the Summerhill community – parents, past pupils and local businesses – will be supportive and generous.

Sligo/Leitrim Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin revealed how efforts had been going on for some time to get approval for the new extension.
