Former Sligo councillor Joe Shannon remembered as ‘a true gentleman’



Tributes are being paid today to the late former Fianna Fail Sligo councillor Joe Shannon who passed away at the weekend.

Originally from Cloonloo, Gurteen, in South Sligo, Joe Shannon, who was in his 50s, moved to Jamestown, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim, where he became heavily involved the local community.

Mr. Shannon was co-opted onto Sligo County Council in 1982 after the death of his father, Joe Shannon Sr.

He kept the seat until 1991 and returned to the Council again in 2003 to fill the vacancy following the departure of Fianna Fail’s Eamon Scanlon, who became a senator.

Mr. Shannon was also director of elections for Deputy Scanlon’s successful 2007 general election campaign.

Deputy Scanlon remembered him this morning.

Cathoirleach of Sligo County Council, Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry, described the late Joe Shannon as a ‘true gentleman.’

The late Joe Shannon is survived by his wife Fiona, daughter Melissa and son Daire.

His funeral Mass will be on Wednesday at noon in St Mary’s Church, Carrick on Shannon.
