Five People across the North West Honoured at the National Bravery Awards



Five people from the North West were honoured at the National Bravery Awards in Dublin on Friday evening.

Basil Harte who is a Chef in The Riverside Hotel in Sligo received a Certificate of Bravery for his efforts in rescuing a number of women in an incident in the Garavogue River in Sligo in 2017.

On February of 2017, 3 women had entered the water, with one of which appeared to be unconscious and face down in the river with the second lady nearby. The third women was standing in the River calling for help.

Two Gardaí rescued the unconscious lady and managed to save her life with Mr. Harte rescuing the other two ladies from the river.

Basil Harte along with Garda Pauric Deery, who also rescued a women from the Garavogue in 2018 both received a Certificate of Bravery at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.
