International titles for two Sligomen

Sligo’s Jonathan Dolan and Richard Howley claimed international titles in Badminton and Show Jumping respectively on Sunday.

Badminton star Dolan, who trains in Denmark, won the men’s singles title at the Li Ning Cyprus International.

This victory comes just weeks after the Calry man claimed his first men’s single International title in Brno, Czech Republic last month.

Dolan’s world ranking meant he went straight into the main draw of 32 in the competition but it was no easy path to victory for the Sligoman as he faced the first, second and fifth seed in three of his five match-ups.

Injured had hampered Jonathan’s career in recent years but with back-to-back victories, the Calry man looks to have put all that behind him.

There is no rest for Dolan as he set to compete in the Egypt International next week.

Listen to Jonathan speaking from Cyprus to Ocean FM sport’s Austin O’Callaghan about his recent success:

Dolan wasn’t the only Sligoman to claim an international title on Sunday. Enniscrone showjumper Richard Howley was victorious on Arlo de Blondel in the two-star Grand Prix at Sentower Park in Belgium.

The Sligo man finished almost two seconds ahead of the Brazilian runner-up Marlon Modolo Zanotelli in a contest dominated by Irish riders.

Joining Howley on the leaderboard were Wexford’s Bertram Allen, who finished third with Go to Fortuna, and Kilkenny’s Ger O’Neill who finished fourth on Warrior’s Glory.
