A Sligo Councillor is calling on the local authority to fund the insurance policies of playgrounds around the county.
Fine Gael Councillor Gerrard Mullaney raised the issue at Monday’s monthly meeting of Sligo County Council where he highlighted the fact that some communities have been quoted in excess of €20,000.
A number of playgrounds around the country are funded by their local communities through fundraisers, however, with premiums increasing, there is a fear that it will become too costly to run and will force them to close.
The general consensus in council chambers yesterday was that this is a national issue and needs to be raised in the Dail.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Mullaney agrees it is a national issue but wants to see it addressed locally first.
