Magnificent seven for St Mary’s as Coolera/Strandhill shock Tubber

St Mary’s hit seven goals past Coolaney/Mullinbreena to cruise to an impressive 7-15 to 1-14 win in Sunday’s Belfry Sligo senior football championship quarter-final in Collooney.

Aidan Rooney’s side trailed by a point at half-time but their second-half goal blitz which included three for Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch and 1-5 for Mark Breheny helped Mary’s to a facile win.

The St Mary’s bainisteoir spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Cathal Mullaney after the win:

Their semi-final opponents will be neigbhouring club Coolera/Strandhill who shocked last year’s county finalists Tubbercurry in Bunninadden to win by a point: 1-16 to 2-12.

A late Johnny Quinn goal for Shamrcck Gaels snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat against Calry/St Joseph’s in the day’s other quarter-final. Calry led by three points deep in added time before Quinn fired home the equalising goal in the dying moments.

The replay has been fixed for next Sunday (29th) again in Collooney at 4pm – the same afternoon as Sligo Rovers FAI Cup semi-final against Dundalk at the Showgrounds.
