Local concerns raised on Garda reform in the North West

The Oireachtas Justice Committee are being afforded the opportunity to question the Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris, on his proposed organisational changes in the force later today.

The Commissioner is proposing a number of changes including reducing the number of Garda divisions from 28 to 19 to free up officers for more front line duties.

The proposed changes have been criticised by a number of groups including the Garda Representative Association,

They claim some divisions won’t have enough resources to cover their expanded areas.

Donegal independent TD Thomas Pringle is a member Justice Committee, he says the changes could have a negative impact on policing in Donegal and the new extended Donegal division will not have the required resources to deal with the possible increase of smuggling activity in the border region in the aftermath of a no deal Brexit.
