Leitrim has the highest number of, what’s described as, ‘mirco-enterprises’ in Ireland.
According to research by the Western Development Commission, almost 95% of all enterprises in the county employ 10 or fewer people – the highest share in the country, along with Roscommon.
The analysis shows 93% of businesses in Sligo have 10 staff or less however, only 32% of people working in enterprises are employed by these types of smaller companies.
WDC Policy Analyst Pauline White says, while enterprises across the region were hit during the recession, growth has accelerated in recent years.
