‘Dozens’ of families in Sligo unable to get seats for their children on school buses

With the new school year underway, it’s been claimed that dozens of families cannot get a seat for their children on school buses.

Sligo Councillor Thomas Healy says he has received calls about the problem from parents who have children attending Summerhill and the Ursuline colleges in Sligo town, St Mary’s College in Ballisodare, and Coola Post Primary School, near Riverstown.

Cllr Healy says school pupils cannot get a place on a bus despite being willing to pay for it.

He points out that it means parents have to take time off work to do school runs, it results in more vehicles on the roads and increases CO2 emissions.

And he says the problem is worse this year than in previous years.
