It’s back to school — and hopes of a bright future — at St Mary’s College in Ballisodare

A Sligo college that had feared it would be closed has got off to a good start for the new school year, with a first-year enrolment of 19 pupils.

It took a strong local campaign before the trustees of St Mary’s College in Ballisodare decided earlier this year to defer their plans to shut the school.

The Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust (CEIST) said it had made the decision following the support of the Department of Education and Skills as it sought to make provision for future projected enrolment in the greater Sligo area.

Local councillor Marie Casserly, who is a teacher at St Mary’s College, says there’s now a new optimism about the Ballisodare school’s future.
